OBS instructor

OBS instructors undergo rigorous training for six to eight months to become qualified outdoor educators. They develop expertise in technical outdoor skills, pedagogical methods, and comprehensive safety procedures including wilderness first aid to facilitate meaningful experiential learning journeys. As mentors and safety officers, each instructor leads a small group called a 'watch' of 12 to 14 students, guiding them through their transformative Outward Bound experience.
Medical and operations support

OBS maintains comprehensive safety systems through its Operations Room and Medical Support facilities.
The Operations Room serves as a central command centre, coordinating daily activities, monitoring weather conditions, and managing any incidents. Staff maintain constant communication with Instructors in the field, providing immediate support and oversight, particularly during expeditions and overnight camping activities.
Our dedicated medical facilities across OBS campuses operate 24 hours when a programme is ongoing, staffed by qualified registered nurses. These experienced nurses provide essential medical care and monitoring, working under protocols developed in consultation with our Medical Advisory Panel of specialist doctors. For minor medical issues, students receive on-site care and can resume activities once recovered. In cases requiring external medical attention, schools will be updated to communicate directly with parents.
Basic necessities

Meals and nutrition
We provide halal-certified meals that meet Singapore Food Agency standards. During expeditions, participants receive dry rations including bread, assorted buns and biscuits, fruits, isotonic drinks and Meal-Ready-to-Eat (MRE) packs.
Facilities and accommodation
Our Pulau Ubin campus features its own reservoir and water treatment system, with water fountains accessible across all OBS campuses. During overnight stays, participants sleep in 6 men tents, with instructors positioned nearby and available if needed during the night.
Campus and facilities

OBS operates four well-equipped campuses across mainland Singapore and Pulau Ubin. Each campus is secured with regular perimeter patrols by security personnel, ensuring participants’ safety throughout their stay.
All campuses provide essential amenities, including toilet and shower facilities. Our Pulau Ubin campus features an on-site Cookhouse that prepares fresh meals for participants during their campus-based activities. For programmes conducted at mainland campuses, we collaborate with catering partners who provide meals and expedition rations, maintaining our high standards of food quality and safety.
