Overview

Challenge Course Instructor (CCI) certification course is a 5-days technical skills course, designed for operating training facilities at the  Ministry of Education (MOE)’s Outdoor Adventure Learning Centres (OALC) and are based on their local operating systems, procedures and devices.

Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) as the certifying body for all levels of CCI certifications shall issue a certificate for fellow OE practitioner who undergo the training and have passed all assessment criteria.

During the conduct of CCI trainings, OBS staff shall use OBS issued equipment or OALC’s issued equipment. If an actual rescue is to be performed during the course conduct, CCI Trainers are to adopt the appropriate rescue technique/method, received in their training.

The OBS Challenge Course Instructor Level 1 (CCI Lv1) is a proficiency certification, which aims to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of conducting safe and quality rope course activities. It will equip participants with the technical skills and competencies in setting up, conducting, and supervising the following activities:

  • Abseiling

  • Ziplining

  • Self/Continuous Belay High Challenge Course

  • Top Rope Belaying

Participants will also be exposed to practical hands-on scenarios of participant management when conducting the rope courses. At the end of this certification course, participants are required to take a written and practical assessment. Upon passing both the written and practical assessment of the certification course, participants will be awarded the OBS CCI Lv1 Certification which is valid for 1 year.

Training delivery

The course will be conducted both indoors and outdoors, leveraging on case studies, role-playing and simulated challenge ropes courses, abseiling and zipline scenarios. A practical assessment of the learning component will be conducted to validate the acquisition of skills by the participant. A maximum of 3 attempts will be granted per assessment component. 

To complete the course, participants will have to be assessed as competent in all practical components and to achieve at least an 80% attendance.

Course objectives

The Learning Objectives for the CCI Level 1 Certification Course are as follows:

  • Learners can prepare their personal protection equipment and devices for safe and effective conduct of Challenges Course activities.

  • Learners can apply proper knots tying techniques during their preparation and conducting phase of the Challenge Course activities.

  • Learners can apply the different facilitation techniques during situations where briefing and debriefing are required.

  • Learners can apply the different facilitation techniques during situations where briefing and debriefing are required.

  • Learners can perform One-Man Belay technique (4 Steps Belay method)

  • Learners are to be able to dispatch and allocate supervisor as station dispatcher on a Challenge Course activity.

  • Learners can perform a recovery technique during a Challenge Course operation. 

  • Learners can perform risks management explicitly while conducting a Challenge Course activity

Assessment

The training and assessment are conducted in MOE OALCs and are based on their local operating systems, procedures and devices. Certification issued are “Site Specific”, valid only for the OALCs

  • Theory test (to score at least 80%); and

  • Practical test (to score 100% “Competent”)

  • Fulfil at least 80% of attendance

Pre-requisites

  • Candidate shall be a minimum age of 21 years old.

  • Training and Assessment shall be conducted over 5 full Days (minimum of 40 hours)

To note

  • The OBS CCI Lv1 Certification is valid for one (1) year.

  • Acceptance into the course is based on a confirmation sent out by OBS after all relevant documents have been submitted and payment has been made before course commencement.

  • E- Certificate will be issued to those who have successfully met the passing requirements and assessedas Competent.

  • Certified Licence Trainer is not to perform any activities with Expired certification

  • Certificate Licence is to be renewed prior to Expiration date; Extension of License will not be entertained without valid reason.

Certificate License remains expired as of the last Expiry date until successfully renewed within the next available course date. Else, a full course is required to practice / execute the role of a CCI Level 1 Practitioner.
